How to Properly Track Training Volume (Especially for Single-Arm & Single-Leg Exercises)

If you’re serious about hypertrophy, muscle preservation, or recomposition, you cannot just “work hard.”

You need to measure your work.

And one of the biggest mistakes I see, especially with experienced lifters, is inconsistent volume tracking when it comes to dumbbells and unilateral exercises.

IN SHORT

  • Volume = Load × Reps × Sets
  • Bilateral dumbbell exercises = count total load moved
  • Single-arm/leg exercises = count both limbs’ total work
  • Be consistent so you can compare week to week
  • Mechanical tension isn’t just about numbers — stability demands matter too

Now let’s break it down properly.

What Is Training Volume?

In simple terms:

Volume = Load × Reps × Sets

If you press 65 lb for 10 reps:

65 × 10 = 650 lb of volume for that set

This is the foundation of progressive overload. If volume trends upward over time (while recovery is managed), muscle adapts.

But dumbbells and unilateral work complicate things.

Example 1: Barbell Overhead Press

65 lb × 10 reps

Volume per set =
65 × 10 = 650 lb

Clean. Simple. Easy to log.

Example 2: Dumbbell Overhead Press (Both Arms Pressing Together)

You grab two 25 lb dumbbells and press them overhead for 10 reps.

Now what?

Each arm holds 25 lb — but your body is moving 50 lb total per rep.

So:

25 + 25 = 50 lb total load
50 × 10 = 500 lb volume per set

You can log this as:

  • 50 × 10
    or
  • 25s × 10 (just mentally note total load = 50)

The key is consistency.

Example 3: Single-Arm Dumbbell Overhead Press

Now you press 25 lb for 10 reps each arm.

Here’s where most people mess up.

Right arm:
25 × 10 = 250

Left arm:
25 × 10 = 250

Total volume = 500 lb

Even though it was 10 reps per arm, that equals 20 total reps of 25 lb.

You can log it as:

  • 25 × 10 each arm
    or
  • 25 × 20 total reps

Both equal 500 lb of work.

So What’s the Best Way to Track It?

If your goal is hypertrophy and progressive overload:

Track total external load moved.

This allows you to compare:

  • Barbell press: 65 × 10 = 650 lb
  • DB bilateral press: 50 × 10 = 500 lb
  • DB unilateral press: 25 × 20 = 500 lb

Now you can see actual workload differences.

That’s data you can use.

But Here’s the Important Nuance

Mechanical tension isn’t just about volume.

A single-arm 25 lb press often feels harder than pressing 2 × 25 together because:

  • Greater stabilization demand
  • More core activation
  • Less neural contribution from the opposite limb
  • More anti-rotation demand

The total volume may match — but the stimulus is slightly different.

This matters when programming for:

  • Shoulder hypertrophy
  • Core stability
  • Imbalance correction
  • Athletic performance

How I Recommend You Log It

Track two things:

  1. Total load moved
  2. Per-limb performance

Example entry:

Single-Arm DB Overhead Press
25 lb × 10 each arm
Total volume = 500 lb

Now you know:

  • The total workload
  • Whether one side is lagging

That’s intelligent training.

Why This Matters for Muscle Growth

If you’re lifting heavy 4–6 days per week like many of you are, small tracking errors compound over time.

If you don’t know:

  • Weekly volume per muscle group
  • Whether one side is weaker
  • Whether volume is trending up

You’re guessing.

And guessing doesn’t build muscle efficiently.

Research consistently shows that total weekly volume is one of the primary drivers of hypertrophy (Schoenfeld et al., 2017). But that only works if you actually measure it properly.

 

Don’t overcomplicate it — but don’t be sloppy either.

  • Bilateral DB work → count total weight
  • Unilateral work → count both limbs
  • Track total volume
  • Note per-side performance
  • Stay consistent

If you measure correctly, you’ll know when to push volume, when to pull back, and when you’ve earned an increase in load.

And that’s how you train with intention — not just intensity.
